Posted by Lilyrose on 29 May 2008 The best thing about this book is that it tries to grip the reader and feel the pain of the characters, but the worst thing about the book is that nobody can feel sorry for the Boleyns...when a character is moulded thus, it is foolish to expect the sympathy of the readers. The book could have been shorter, crisper,...but no, Philippa Gregory had to go all out, make most of the scenes repetitive(seriously , i found each of the pregnancy 'waiting for the boy' scenes irritating and pathetic)
Tudor England is a fascinating time frame for any writer to spin her yarn.Gregory does a good job at times, barring even the historical inaccuracies, but the meandering tale just makes Gregory's good writing look silly. And the climax is nothing out of the ordinary or unpredictable.Especially when Gregory's tried her best to make Anne Boleyn, the evil, cunning, seductress and Mary Boleyn, the charming, nice, wonderful girl.A better edited version of the book would have been more likeable, especially since Gregory achieves nothing out of repetition.
I was glad to end this book...because it was a huge book, and a long read...and finally, definitely not worth it!
